In Māori culture, Whiro (also known as Whiro-te-tipua) is most commonly known as the atua (god) of darkness, death, and evil. He is the brother and eternal rival of Tāne, the god of forests and light. Whiro famously attempted to stop Tāne from ascending to the heavens to retrieve the three baskets of knowledge by sending swarms of bats and insects.
