Four Taniwha

Nukutawhiti’s voyage to Aotearoa on the Ngātokimatawhaorua waka was guided by four taniwha—Āraiteuru, Niua, Puhimoanaariki, and Rangiuruhinga—who flanked the vessel to protect it. They were supported by two atua (gods), Te Hikooterangi and Maheretūkiterangi, with the journey marked by the, magical, "great wave" (Ngarunui).
